Four centres across Wales took part in an on-line Learning Circle (Dwr-y-Felin Comprehensive School, Coleg Gwent, Ystrad Mynach College and St Christopher’s Special School. A learning circle is a very successful model for involving learners in collaborative project work. Groups of learners from different centres work on one aspect of a common project: in this case that of fairness in sports. Each centre researches all of the topics and takes responsibility for reporting back on one of them. All of the reports are brought together in a common format as a presentation. All of the work produced through this learning circle will be published as a website.

The project aim was to develop and deliver a programme of study in Wider Key Skills to sixth form students. All students at Gwernyfed High School are involved in at least one enrichment activity. A Virtual Learning Environment (Moodle) was designed to encourage independent learning skills, provide resources for developing wider key skills and track and monitor progress in achieving wider key skills qualifications

Key Stage 4 pupils developed and practiced the wider key skills through their work for Edexcel’s Diploma in Digital Applications. The pupils produced key skills e-portfolios alongside their e-portfolios for DiDA.

The DELSS project developed the opportunity for all sports staff to receive key skills training and to develop a comprehensive plan for year 10 students following either GCSE or Entry Level Physical Education courses to achieve all 6 key skills. Students would also undertake a community based Junior Sports Leaders Award over two years.

This particular project aims to develop Key Skills in low ability year 9-11 students using Citizenship themes such as empathy, children’s rights, participation and problem solving. The project culminates in the young people making a plasticine animation and utilising the Key Skills they have been practising throughout the other sessions.

Two groups of students took part in the project. The first group included 8 key stage 5 post 16 students from mainstream and special schools who worked with a learning coach to develop and accredit their key skills. The second group was comprised of 42 year 10 pupils involved in the pilot of the WBQ foundation award. The form tutor and citizenship tutors supported the pupils in developing their key skill of IOLP at an appropriate level, linking the development of portfolios to their progress file.

Using the Learning Coach to support Key Skills |

The project centred on the use of a learning coach working with a group of students who required greater personal support in order to develop and accredit their key skills. Learning Coaches felt knowledge of key skills standards complemented their role.
