Ministerial approval for new professional teaching standards in Wales |

John Griffiths AM, Deputy Minister for Children, Education, Lifelong Learning and Skills has announced a set of new professional teaching standards for the lifelong learning sector in Wales. The aim is to raise teaching standards for all teachers, tutors and trainers and in turn increase the achievements of learners across Wales. More

The UK Sector Skills Council for the post 16 training and learning sector, Lifelong Learning UK (LLUK) has been contracted, by DELLS, to develop a set of professional standards for all those engaged in teaching, tutoring and training.
These new standards are expected to be broadly similar to those standards recently developed for the sector in England but will fully reflect the needs of Wales including the differing arrangements for 14-19 provision, Key and Basic Skills and bilingualism.

As explained previously, work is now in hand to develop a new set of professional standards for the Initial Teacher Training and Continuous Professional Development of practitioners in the post compulsory sector in Wales. The work on developing these standards has now begun.

Standards for initial training and CPD of teachers, tutors and lecturers in learning & skills sector |

Currently the ‘Teaching and Supporting Learning’ standards underpinning initial training for post-compulsory practitioners are professional standards for both Wales and England. They were embraced in Wales in 2002 by the statutory instrument which also made it a requirement for all new entrants to teaching in FE to gain a qualification based on these standards.
